English Violet (Bunch)

The sweet violet, Viola odorata, may be a diminutive flower, but the small, pansy-like flowers are highly fragrant. An exquisite and rarest of treats, with a short vase life presented in an apothecary bottle. 

The coming of the railways in the 1840s in the UK enabled florists and growers to box up bunches of violets for Covent Garden flower market, the train stations becoming known for the sweet smell of violets stacked up on the platform greeting early morning passengers. But violets are an ancient cut flower grown for millennia, the Greek philosopher Theophrastus (371 – 287BC) writes about them being grown under olive trees in Attica and being sold in the markets of Athens.
