Care Guide

Fresh Cut Flower Care

Floral varieties and colour ways may vary due to seasonal availability. A couple of tips to increase longevity of your flowers:

•       If you receive a wrapped bouquet, remove the paper to allow the flowers to breathe. Flowers are wrapped to protect the blooms during transit. Remove wrapping to allow a natural flow of air to the parts of flower that are tucked down in the paper.

•       When choosing a vase for your flowers opt for something with an opening that allows the flowers to sit comfortably. If your vase is too small, your flowers may not get the amount of water they need. The bottom of the vase should be large enough to hold a substantial amount of water and strong enough to hold the flowers. If you receive a vase arrangement, some of these steps will already be done for you. We always recommend checking the water level in your vase when you receive it as water can be lost during transit.

•       When the stem of a flower is cut, the end starts to callus over time which restricts the amount of water the stem can then drink. Snip about 1-2cm off the ends of your stems before placing them into water. On receiving your flowers, be sure to trim their stems on a 45-degree angle prior to placing them in their vase. Use sharp scissors when trimming the stems to avoid damaging the tissue / cells at the base.

•       Flowers consume a lot of water. Ensure two thirds of the vase is full. Not all stems are cut to the same length so ensure the water is high enough for them all to reach. Not enough water in the vase means it will empty quite quickly and your flowers will become dehydrated. As flowers are susceptible to bacterial build up, change their water every two days and freshly cut their stems. Some flowers drink through their petals (Hydrangeas, Phalaenopsis, Dancing Lady Orchids). Every couple of days, soak these kind of flowers in cold water from the tap to refresh them.

•       By keeping your flowers out of direct sunlight and heat you will be ensuring their longevity, as they will mature more quickly when exposed to these elements

•       Remember, flowers are a natural product and we don’t get to determine their life span, we can only help to prolong it by caring for them properly. By following these steps, you are doing everything you can to ensure you get to enjoy your flowers for longer.
